Q&A: What speaking opportunities exist within corporations?

Today kicks off a new Q&A series featuring questions from our readers.

April writes: My ideal clients are corporate executives, so I’d like to speak to corporate market. What speaking opportunities exist within corporations?

Great question, April. There are so many speaking opportunities in the corporate space, so this is a great avenue to pursue. Many organizations have budgets earmarked for training and they invest in various programs and education for their employees.

Corporations of all sizes hire experts to train their employees because it’s less expensive and more convenient than paying for thousands of employees to attend a conference or other type of training. They want to invest in their employees’ professional development, encourage innovation and increase engagement.

Here are a few of the opportunities available to speak to corporate employees:

Lunch and Learns – As the name describes, lunch and learns are presentations hosted during the company lunch hour. Program topics can range from financial planning and tips on buying a home to strategies for improving productivity or reducing stress. If you are new to corporate training, this is a great introduction to working with corporate clients.

Workshops – Like a lunch & learn, workshops are held on a variety of different topics. Half-day or full-day programs provide more in-depth education for individual employees or teams.

Company retreats or off-site meetings – Corporations often host retreats or off-site trainings, typically in the summer months, to get their employees out of the office for a few days. The programs are designed to inspire creativity and innovation, motivate employees and also to have some fun. These retreats usually include team-building exercises, so this is a wonderful opportunity for speakers who provide entertainment, adventure experiences or other team-building services.

Now that you know what speaking opportunities exist, it’s time to do your homework. This week I challenge you to attend networking events, read local business journals and ask friends and family about corporate training opportunities in your area.

Now it’s your turn. Have you led corporate training programs? Share your experiences in the comments below.
